We
recommend 1-2 nights in this oil capital. There are 3* hotels. The
city was built on the foothills of the Chenque Hill, where you can
observe the topographic features of the area. The presence of the
oil turned this deserted spot into a active urban centre with diverse
characteristics, all of which makes Comodoro Rivadavia one of the
largest and most modern cities of southern Argentina. more...
City
Tour
Due to the importance of its industrial development, its oil and its
paleontological and archeological possessions, visit the Museo
Nacional del Petróleo (National Oil Museum), the ancient Astra
Field next to the Canadon Blanco, and the Geological Interpretation
Centre in the Paleontological Museum.
Camarones
Bay
Penguins and two-hair sea lions are protected in this reserve. These
species together with the marine fauna are part of a unique landscape.
Camarones is a picturesque village located by the sea. The contrast
between the deep blue waters and the red cliffs that surround the
city provides one of the most beautiful views of the Patagonian Atlantic
coast. more...
Puerto
Deseado
To
the south of the San Jorge Gulf, 300 km from Comodoro Rivadavia is
Puerto Deseado. The Puerto Deseado Estuary is one of the largest
marine reserves of the planet, a coastal area that arose after
being submerged for a long time. The marine birds that inhabit its
coasts and the abundant fish in its waters form this rich fauna reserve.
Among them, the cormorants penguins, seagulls, skuas and oyster-catchers
stand out. During the summer this is the habitat of the one-hair and
two-hair sea lions, sea elephants and right whales. But the biggest
attraction is, undoubtedly, the tonina overa: a most beautiful black
and white dolphin that mates in the bay. From October to April the
Magellan penguin arrives here to feed and mate. more...
José
Ormachea Petrified Woods
156
km to the west of Comodoro Rivadavia is Sarmiento Colony.
This
is the nearest town to the petrified forests area. Different geological
folds sank these forest areas that, at present and after about 100
million years, arose due to the erosive action of the winds. These
forests are made up of fossilized trees that were found in the same
place where they stood a long time ago; a proof of that is that they
were petrified when they found them, but they were also standing,
with their roots still buried in the soil and almost entirely covered
with volcanic ash.
This
process took place in a large region of Chubut province and in the
north of Santa Cruz province. The Jose Ormachea forest is located
376 km from Comodoro Rivadavia. It is a full day tour where you can
find the fossils of ancient petrified araucarias of about 80 million
years of age surrounded by hills of different shades of green, red,
yellow, ochre and gray, offer an unforgettable scene to the visitor.
