The
southern-most region of the country is formed by 2 provinces: Santa
Cruz and Tierra del Fuego, together with Antarctic portion. Click here for information.
El Calafate
At the foot of the Calafate mountain and on the shores of Lake Argentino,
in the midst of snowcapped mountains. A pleasant tourist village with
good hotel facilities, it is the main base to discover the attraction
of the area. It has hotels from 4* to tourist class as well as comfortable
estancias. El Calafate is the national capital of the Glaciers and
the most important city of the area. more...
Los
Glaciares National Park
Located in the extreme southwest of Santa Cruz Province. One of the
largest national parks of the country and perhaps the only truly untouched
area in the southern continent. An area covered with ice, whose origins
go back to the quaternary era when the last glaciating period took
place. It was declared a UNESCO Monument of the World Patrimony.
Its
core is in the Andes between the 40º and 51º parallels of southern
latitude, where there is a layer of eternal snow called the Continental
Ice Field. This field adopts a long shape from north to south with
an extension of about 350 km and a surface of 14,300 km2 approximately.
47 major glaciers descend from this ice field, 13 of which belong
to the Atlantic and are called (from north to south): Marconi,
Viedma, Moyano, Upsala, Bolado, Onelli, Peineta, Spegazzini, Mayo,
Ameghino, Moreno and Frias. All of them flow into Lake
Argentino and Lake Viedma. more...
Perito
Moreno Glacier
This
is the most important and the most easily-reached glacier. It extends
over the Rico inlet of Lake Argentino. This is an imposing ice river, 3 km in width and 60 m in height,
that descends slowly from the Continental Ice Field to the shore of
the lake, in the Canal de los Témpanos (Icebergs Channel). It has
turned into the biggest attraction of the region thanks to its spectacular
beauty, its glacial interest and its different behaviour to the rest
of the glaciers of the world: every 4 or 5 years, when its tongue
crosses the Canal de los Tempanos and hits the Magellan Peninsula
the break up occurs and the noise can sometimes be heard from El Calafate. more...
Upsala
& Onelli Glaciers
Lake Argentino reaches its biggest depth (over 1,000m) in front of
Upsala Glacier, located two and a half hours by boat. It is the largest
continental glacier of the southern hemisphere with 595 km2 (three
times bigger than Buenos Aires city). Onelli Bay is located on the
channel of the same name, in the north arm of the Lake Argentino. more...
Torre
and Fitz Roy Mountains
The
legendary peaks of the Torre Mountain and the Fitz Roy Mountain stand
out in the middle of the flat Patagonian steppe and attract numerous
climbing expeditions from all over the world. Short lateral valleys
placed before the mountain chains make the access to this exquisite
scenery very difficult. A wide variety of walks can be taken in this
sector. From Calafate, this area is reached through the National Route
40 that runs parallel to the Andes. After 220km the road ends at El
Chalten, name the indians gave to the Fitz Roy mountain. more...
Lago
Roca & Nibepo Aike
In the Roca Lake, located in the southern area of Argentino Lake and
25 km from El Calafate. This place is reached through a typical Patagonian
road, admiring rupestrian paintings and landscape. Stop at Estancia
La Anita to be told about sheep-rains and wool. A change in the vegetation
is gradually seen due to the increase of rains. The road ends at the
Estancia Nibepo Aike, surrounded by the Andean Patagonian forest. more...
Tierra
del Fuego
Between
Cape Horn and the Magellan Strait. The widespread idea of Tierra del
Fuego, desolate and icy, is far from reality. This is a lively and
fertile land full of flowers, plants and birds. The Argentine Antarctica,
the Islands of the South Atlantic and the Falkland Islands depend
on this province. It is only one of the hundreds of islands that form
the archipelago that goes from the Magellan Strait to Cape Horn. more...
Ushuaia
Known
as the southernmost city of the world, Ushuaia is 3,300 km from Buenos
Aires. Located in the southern area of Tierra del Fuego, by the Beagle
Channel, and surrounded by the Martial Hill, which offers a unique
landscape due to the combination of mountains, sea, glaciers and forests.
The strange topography of the region created a very picturesque city
that combines colours and depressions with the Andes in the background.
From the coast to the south there is a superb view of the bay, the
peninsula, the Beagle Channel and the Navarino and Hoste islands. more...
Ushuaia
offers a wide range of services and hotels category, from 4* to tourist
category. We recommend 2-3 nights.
Torres
del Paine National Park
Located in Chile, this is one of the main point of interest for the
lovers of long walks. It is located in the Magellan region that occupies
the southern extreme of the Chilean territory, whose most important
cities from north to south are: Puerto Natales, Punta Arenas, Porvenir
and Puerto Williams. The nearest airports are in Río Gallegos (420
km away) and in Punta Arenas (395 km away). From Argentina, it is
also possible to reach this region by land through any of the border passes by private transfers or regular buses.
Rio
Gallegos
It is the capital city of the Santa Cruz province of Chile, 2,700
km and about 4 hours by plane from Buenos Aires. Located on the banks
of the river of the same name by the Atlantic Ocean, it concentrates
all the commercial and administrative activities of the southern region
of Patagonia that developed around the port of deep waters where the
wool and coal production is exported. It
is the gateway to the region of the glaciers: regular flights to Calafate,
and land services in private vehicle or coach that covers the more
than 300 km that separate one city from the other. more...
Antarctica
& the Southern Islands
The
Archipelago of the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) is made
up of two big islands: Soledad to the east and Gran Malvina to the
West. Its waters are rich in fish, crustaceans and molluscs. Its coasts
possess numerous penguin colonies and a wide variety of marine fauna.
They are under British rule since 1833.
A
triangular sector with vertex in the South Pole, only 500 km from
Tierra del Fuego, is occupied by the Argentine Antarctica.
The triangle includes the Antarctic Peninsula and numerous islands
and archipelagos that surround it. Numerous nations, apart from Argentina,
have scientific bases in this region. The beauty of this landscape
is one of the main attractions for the cruises of this area, though
the direct contact with nature represents a more important factor
for some travelers. more
