Product Review – Shoot Thru Scope Covers

For years, I have used flip-style covers on my rifle scope. While they do a great job of keeping the scope free of dirt, debris, and rain, there is nothing more frustrating than pulling the scope to my eye in order to shoot at a nice buck, only to see nothing but black. By the time I realize that I haven’t remembered to flip up the scope cover, the buck is gone and so is the shot. This has happened to me on more than one occasion. I also didn’t like the “pop” sound the flip-up covers make when you open them, potentially spooking animals that are nearby, so I was excited to give Shoot-Thru Scope Covers a try.

Shoot-Thru Scope Covers are clear, optical quality polycarbonate lenses that slip over both ends of your rifle scope and provide essentially the same protection as a flip-up cover, while at the same time allowing crystal-clear view through the scope when needed. The kit comes with three sets of lenses, covers for each end of the scope, elastic cord to attach the two ends, and a Velcro strip to wrap around the scope to hold the elastic cord and keep the covers with the gun. The lenses are easily changeable and come in clear, gray, and yellow in order to customize to meet the needs of each shooting condition. The cost of the kit on their website (www.shoot-thru.com) is a very reasonable $9.95. Replacement clear lenses are $1.50; yellow lenses are $3.95. Covers and lenses come in a variety of sizes to fit nearly every scope; the website has a chart to help you choose the right one.

Assembly of the system was quick and simple. I was very impressed by the clarity of the lens covers. They are so clear that I couldn’t even tell they were in place. Target acquisition was immediate. Under normal shooting conditions, there was no glare. If removing the covers is desired, this is very easily accomplished as the fit on the scope ends is not tight.

After using Shoot-Thru Scope Covers, I will not go back to using the flip up style. I’m thrilled to no longer worry about missing a possible shot opportunity because I forgot to flip my scope cover.

  1. Clear and transparent cover lenses will certainly get rid of the flipping sound and make your sighting faster. But if you install it in your sniper scope, is there an adjustment that you have to make for your sighting?

  2. It’s obvious to me: if you can’t see without a flashlight, do you really need to be shooting? In this day of high-tech flashlights, about the best distance you can hope that a flashlight is going to effectively light is well inside the range of a pistol. The advantage of the rifle’s precision is going to be lost if you shine a light toward a target that can shoot back: outside the effective distance that a flashlight is going to illuminate, all that a flashlight does is give another shooter the perfect target at which to aim. So if equipping a rifle with a flashlight is done for night defense, you’d be far better off to use a laser — which eliminates the need for both a red dot sight and a light.

  3. TO ME GUN COLLCTING IS THE HUNT THIS CAN TAKE YEARS FOR A SINGLE PIECE THEN WHEN YOU FINALY GET IT. IT’S GOES UP ON THE WALL AND YOU START ALL OVER AGAIN…RFS

  4. Shoot Thru scope is great choice for newbie like me
